Introduction
The Department of Mathematics at the University of the Punjab is one of the university’s oldest aca- demic units, founded in 1921. Over the years, it has produced numerous distinguished graduates, many of whom have gained prominence in Mathematics. For a considerable period, the department operated on an inter-collegiate basis, with faculty members from local institutions such as Government College Lahore, Forman Christian College, Dyal Singh College, Islamia College Civil Lines, and M.A.O. College, Lahore, conducting M.Sc. classes at the university. In 1956, the department became an independent institution with the appointment of two full-time faculty members: one reader and one senior lecturer. Since then, the department has steadily grown and now offers a range of programs, including BS (4 years), BS (5 semesters), M.Phil., and Ph.D.
In 1982, the department established a computer center to enhance the computational capabilities of uni- versity students, faculty, and staff. Furthermore, the Department of Mathematics publishes the Punjab University Journal ofMathematics, with its inaugural issue released in 1967 under the editorship of Prof. Dr. Syed Manzur Hussain.
The department is home to four robust research groups: Computational Mathematics, Fuzzy Mathematics, Gravitation & Cosmology, and Pure Mathematics. These groups contribute to the academic strength of the department, fostering innovation and advancing knowledge in their respective fields.
Director's Message
We take pride in the Department of Mathematics at the University of the Punjab, one of the oldest departments in the university, for its continued commitment to providing quality education to deserving students from across Pakistan. Mathematical knowledge is essential for the advancement of science, as mathematics serves as a fundamental science that can be applied across various social sciences. It is a discipline that supports and enriches other fields by providing theoretical foundations and practical techniques. The department’s educational mission is to produce mathematicians who can contribute meaningfully to society.
Mathematics has become integral to modern research across all disciplines and underpins advancements in technology, industry, and government. We encourage students who wish to delve deeper into math- ematics to join us in this pursuit. The Department of Mathematics plays a key role in the university’s undergraduate and postgraduate teaching mission, and at the research level, we focus on diverse areas such as Computational Mathematics, Fuzzy Mathematics, Gravitation & Cosmology, and Pure Mathe- matics.
I warmly welcome all new entrants to this historic institution and hope that their time in the department will be both enriching and fulfilling. I am confident that they will make the most of the department’s excellent faculty and resources.
May Allah bless them with greater knowledge and success in their lives!
